  1. An Honest John M31 worth adding to the fleet!

Posted by Mikal Wayne Moore, TRA 7689 L3 on 15th Feb 2019

I have been privileged to teach Rocketry 101 in a 2-day class in my local school corporation for over 20 years. The area in which the school is located, is the very same ground in which my dad and I first fly my Honest John in the 70's. My love of the M31 is a lifetime endeavor. This fiberglass 2.6 model fits very well into my curriculum in our southern Indiana launch area beside the school. The build is straight forward. Parts are very close to finish. The nosecone was a bit rough, but nothing a little polyester and elbow grease couldn't take care of. Deciding on which paint scheme is the hardest issue that I have yet to overcome. My L3 7.5 inch HoJo is in OD. But I'm leaning towards the white with black roll stripes. A great 2.6 M31 to build and add to the fleet. Madcow Rocketry is a pleasure to work with. Timely returned my email questions and phone calls. Now to wait for their stock to replenish for a 5.5 Nike Smoke and plead with them for their huge Honest John that is currently out of production.

  2. Defending Europe

The Honest John is another great thin-walled fiberglass kit from Madcow. Easy build and it flies great. Use Rust-oleum camouflage spray paint in army green to get a flat military style finish.

History
The HONEST JOHN M31 was a simple, free-flight rocket capable of delivering a nuclear warhead. This highly mobile system was designed to fire like conventional artillery in battlefield areas. The Basic (M31) HONEST JOHN system was first deployed in 1954. It was replaced by the Improved (M50) HONEST JOHN (left) in 1961 which reduced the system's weight, shortened its length, and increased its range. In July 1982, all HONEST JOHN rocket motors, launchers, and related ground equipment items were type classified obsolete.
